HCHS Students Learn History through Music

During Vidito’s presentation entitled A Nation Once More, students learned how Julia
Ward Howe took the tune to the lesser known anti-slavery song “John Brown’s
Body” and transformed it into the better known “Battle Hymn of the
Republic.” In addition, students learned the folklore which formed the
basis for the song “Follow the Drinking Gourd” and the purpose this song served
in the success of Underground Railroad. By weaving historical narration
with the performance of these and other songs, Vidito engaged students by
bringing history to life though music.
