NO SCHOOL MONDAY AUGUST 21ST

August 16, 2017

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Due to increasing concern for students and staff safety, the Hickman County School District has planned to close Monday, August 21, due to the solar eclipse.

The decision to cancel was “to err on the side of safety.” Safety of all students is and will continue to be the major priority in our school system.

District and school leaders have been doing research along with and talking to the Kentucky Department of Education and the Center for Safe Schools. Based on this information, district leadership concluded the best option is closure of schools during this event which may consist of many different variables which impact student and staff safety.

Even though students will not be in school on Monday, students will still be educated on how to properly view the eclipse. This event continues to be an opportunity to educate students about a solar eclipse and the safety precautions to follow during this extraordinary event.

Information has been sent home with students about safely viewing this event. Safety glasses, produced by a NASA approved company, will be sent home. Read safety materials regarding safe viewing.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause parents/guardians of our students. Hopefully, timing of this announcement will allow for necessary arrangements to be completed.

The safety of students and staff is always our primary goal and a leading factor in the decision to cancel classes. We hope that parents and students will use the opportunity to share this epic learning opportunity.

This missed day will be made up at a time to be determined later.
